AC Size by Room Type

Floor area is only half the answer. What the room is for decides the other half.

Why room type changes the number

Two rooms of identical size can differ by a factor of four in cooling load. A 120 sq ft study carries about 3,800 BTU/hr. A 120 sq ft server room carries nearly 20,000 — because the equipment inside converts essentially all the electricity it draws into heat, and it does so around the clock.

The factors that move the number are occupancy, equipment and appliance heat, glazing, and whether the space sits inside the conditioned envelope. A kitchen adds an appliance allowance. An attic conversion has roof gain on five surfaces instead of one. A garage usually has no insulation at all. A conservatory is mostly glass, which is why it runs at roughly four times a bedroom's rate per square foot.
