Nominal size is not the same as rated capacity: a unit sold as 4 tons may be rated a little below 48,000 BTU/hr. The rated figure is on the data plate and in the AHRI Directory.

Amana's specification sheets use the same layout as Goodman's, with A as the brand letter.
Current R-32 models (ALXS)
ALXS4BA3610AA: A = Amana, L = R-32 split system, X = condenser (Z = heat pump), S = single-stage, 4 = SEER2 band, B = standard, A = all regions, 36 = 3 tons at characters 8–9. amana-hac.com lists ALXS3B, ALXS4B, ALXS5B, ALXT7C and the variable-speed AXV6S and AXV9S in its current range.
R-410A models (ASX, ANX)
ASX160361: S = split system, X = condenser, 16 = SEER, 0, then 36. The ANX14 sheet also uses alternate codes for the same sizes: ANX140191 is an 18,000 BTU/hr (1½-ton) unit.
We have not found an Amana sheet for the AXV variable-speed models, so the decoder does not read them yet; Amana's split-system sheets list 18 to 60 only (no 09 or 12).
How old is my Amana? Serial number decoder
Amana serial numbers carry the date the unit was built. Type the serial from the rating plate. Amana residential equipment is built by Goodman (now Daikin Comfort) and official recall notices list Amana units under the same serial prefixes as Goodman. The year-then-month layout is confirmed by Goodman's own bulletin and those notices.
How Amana serial numbers encode the date
- Digits 1-2: year of manufacture (18 = 2018)
- Digits 3-4: month of manufacture (04 = April)
- Digits 5-10: running unit number, not a date
Example: 1804165082 = April 2018 (Goodman bulletin SP-039 lists this unit as built 4/11/2018).
Covers: Amana-branded US equipment built by Goodman (10-digit serials, 2003 on). Two-digit years are read as the most recent matching year.
Caveat: CPSC recorded that some evaporator coils built January 2019 to early 2020 were wrongly stamped with 2018 serials (prefixes 1811-1812), so a coil reading Nov or Dec 2018 may be newer.
Where to find the serial: on outdoor units the nameplate is on the panel next to or above the refrigerant line connections; on furnaces it is on a side panel behind the front panel.

How do I read a Amana AC model number?
Amana uses Goodman’s layout with A as the brand letter. On current R-32 models the capacity is at characters 8–9 (ALXS4BA3610AA = 36 = 3 tons); on ASX and ANX models it is characters 7–8 (ASX160241 = 24 = 2 tons). Codes 19, 25, 31, 37 and 43 are alternates for the same sizes.
